Good advices

As a union representative, you may be asked for advice by your members. Union representative sometimes find that a member will come looking for support in getting out of learning something new, using new technology, transferring to a new department, etc. Support and advice that are based on the member’s desires and offered with the best intentions can, in practice, have negative effects. Older employees who ask to avoid such challenges must be made aware of the choices they are faced with, and the consequences those choices could have. In the long run, employees who stop facing the challenges that their job offers will sideline themselves.

As a union representative, it is important that the advice you give helps to strengthen the senior employee. As a union representative, you can advise seniors to:

  • accept challenges
  • participate actively
  • take responsibility for their own competence development
  • keep up with new technology
